Why See a Dietitian?
With so many conflicting messages around nutrition and health, it can be hard to know who to trust. Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) are university-qualified health professionals, responsible for providing evidence-based, personalised nutrition advice and support. The APD credential is a public guarantee of nutrition and dietetic expertise. It is the only nutrition/dietetic credential recognised by the Australian Government, Medicare, the Department of Veterans Affairs and most private health funds in Australia.
Dietitians (APDs) have a minimum of 4 years of university training and undertake ongoing education to ensure their scientific knowledge is up-to-date. Dietitians are trained in ‘Medical Nutrition Therapy’ and have the knowledge to provide advice for a multitude of cases ranging from healthy eating and disease prevention to the treatment medical conditions.
What's the Difference Between Dietitians & Nutritionists?
All Dietitians are Nutritionists, though not all Nutritionists are Dietitians. The title ‘Nutritionist’ is not protected and could be used by someone with tertiary education in nutrition, or somebody without any nutrition education.
A key difference between a Dietitian and qualified Nutritionist is that Dietitians, as part of an accredited university course, were required to complete theory and assessed professional practice in clinical nutrition and medical nutrition therapy. Importantly, this enables Dietitians to provide advice regarding complex medical conditions.
